  • Interested in design
  • Content is good, however …
  • From an aesthetic, our site is pathetic; it doesn’t look very good
  • Much of site reads like a book, not like the Web
  • Getting collection online (Gallery), podcasts, e-mail (Constant Contact), video streaming

Bournakis, Chris

I’m a graphic designer in the Office of Communications and Media Relations. My involvement with the Bates Web site is consulting on the look of pages or subsites that would require a new style sheet as well as some production work such as banner graphics. Still, 85-90% of my work involves print pieces, mostly signature print pieces for the College.

I am interested in finding out how current Web publications are impacting print publications and vice versa. If there are certain trends being created by each having an impact on the other and what kind of impact this has on audiences.

Brooks, Paulette

  • From housing department
  • Looking to be more adept at iCMS
  • Restructuring, remapping of site
  • More images
  • Goal: looking for standards for consistency; confusing for end user when things are in different places

Bumps, Heather

  • President’s office
  • Goal: to get site up to date
  • How to use as tool to communicate with campus
  • Current: diversity related information (with Sue Houchins); some will move to Heather

Burns, Jay

My primary Web interaction is through bates-magazine.xml, though I also help post other stories and photos to Bates Now pages, and like to think I help out ADV/APP with their needs, at least I did during the Campaign for Bates.

Cloutier, Kristen

I am the Administrative Assistant in the Harward Center for Community Partnerships.

This year has been a banner year for me in terms of my work on the web site.  For those of you that don’t know, the Harward Center is in the process of a major overhaul of its web presence.  It has been difficult for us to get what we want in terms of design and functionality so I hope that we can figure out a way to make it easier on other departments going forward.  I do have to say that both OCMR and ILS have been both patient and kind in walking us through the current process.

Because the Harward Center is a somewhat new presence on campus and in the community, marketing and publicity are two of our main goals.  I have been recruited to spearhead these initiatives.  An electronic newsletter is something we would really like to create.  Based upon recent conversations, it appears that the College does not have these capabilities and that other departments are currently using a third party vendor to create theirs.  It seems to me that we may want to look into this further to determine what might be the most cost effective solution for the College going forward given that so many departments on campus are looking to utilize these capabilites.

  • In the midst of site redesign
  • New entity, so visibility is important
  • Also interested in on-line marketing, including e-mail newsletters

Responsibilities at Bates, and on the Web

Parents & Family Association, and Alumni and Parent Programs, within College Advancement. The PFA is a volunteer organization which I staff – parents of students and alumni who volunteer for Bates in a variety of ways – fundraising, communications, welcoming new parents and doing events. I manage the web communications for that group, and at the moment manage the web communications for Alumni and Parent Programs as well – on Bates’ iCMS and Bates’ online community for alumni, parents, students, and eventually staff and faculty and friends.

How do I use the web for Bates?

Communications to alumni and parents about events, news at Bates relative to our constituencies, helpful information for parents and alumni, tool of engagement through interaction – forums, personal profiles, photo albums, class notes and announcements (these latter things through the password protected online community). We use email blasts to constituency groups to drive them to the web to keep them informed, involved, engaged.

Points of improvement; suggestions from my volunteers

The search function off the home page is not effective for parents.

  • Maintain “For Parents” content
  • Also manage online community for alumni and parents, and eventually other constituencies, and how we can use this across campus
  • People call with problems finding things on the Bates Web
  • Goal: process for improving findability
  • Goal: new ideas of how you’re marketing to the outside world; newsletter, e-mail, event registration

Emerson, Ken

The HR portion of the web site grew out of the need to “get something out there”.  The initial site content was done with out a lot of thought on design.  Student help was used to position the initial site and student help has primarily been used for any updates.  For the sake of “getting it out there” I have been the person charged with the responsibility for updates.  However, my time, practice and knowledge is limited.  I am adequate at modifying existing pages but am not skilled at creating anything new (we currently rely on Emmanuel Drabo as our student employee to perform any updates in design).

The web is increasingly used by prospective employees in learning about employment at Bates and our site should reflect current content with best practice navigation.  It would also be convenient if there were the capability for an employee only portion of the site (more of an intranet).

Das, David

Thanks for the email, and I’d be happy to participate.  I am by no means a Web professional — indeed I barely slog my way through basic Dreamweaver.  However, I really do want to learn more and to improve the Off Campus Study Office web pages (for which I am responsible). I have had very basic training with Renee on X-power (or whatever it is called these days), but I certainly have not put that knowledge into practice.  I look forward to lunch.

Faure, Laura

  • We have separate, individual identity, focusing on global arts community
  • With help from Steve and others, developed a distinct look
  • Work with outside vendor
  • Trying to keep up with state of the art … via e-mail newsletter
  • Challenge: keeping visual as well as text content
  • Have gone outside college to pay for services
  • Looking toward time when we can be paperless … when can we make that leap?

Govindasamy, Shirley

Human Resources Department/Payroll Office/Student Employment Office

My responsibilities are small but I do work on the Student Employment Website updating information and directing our SEO coordinator when I want more substantial changes made. Also, I fill in on updating the HR website. I do most of the teasers and supply some of the documents that we reference. I also update information when necessary.

A Virtual International Desk is one of my long term goals.  International students, visiting foreign scholars and faculty members and the people on campus who supervise them, direct them and invite them, need to clear explainations of the laws that are imposed on them and the college long before they ever step foot on campus. Many colleges have pages with detailed information, forms to be completed and the consequences of not being compliant. Bates needs something similar.

Graef, Marsha

I would be interested….I maintain the Physical Education Department’s website, along with the Intramural and club sports…..am trying to “rennovate” the Athletes for Healthy Choices website while creating a new site for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.  The more I can learn the better job I can do….please keep me informed about meetings or get-togethers.

Hart, Jim

Bates History

I’ve been at Bates for 13+ years, starting out in Academic computing, moving to Infrastructure, back to Academic Technology Services, then to Web Technology Services. Before Bates, my background was in Database, IT, systems analysis, systems engineering, and application programming.

Web Responsibilities

  • Web pages
    • Programming for iCMS system: definition of layouts, HTML generation, building components, building templates
    • Web permissions on Abacus
    • Javascript programming
    • Apache Server Side Includes
  • Write database publishing and interactive applications on the Web
    • Code and support serving of Web pages from Filemaker databases
  • Administer Drupal sites
  • Code and administer our Wiki sites

Other Responsibilities

  • Administer and support the ILLiad system for Interlibrary Loan.
  • Administer Linux servers
  • Administer Mac OS X FileMaker servers
  • Co-ordinate sharing of FileMaker databases on FileMaker Server

Desired Improvements

  • Revise how we develop Web pages so that content is better organized, easier to maintain, and reusable.
  • Revise how we develop Web pages to reduce the amount of technical work needed to maintain the Web, so that we can accommodate growth in demand.

Hasch, Elizabeth

  • Denise was previously doing all Web work; Elizabeth is now taking over some of this
  • Goal: To get a high profile site for the Arts on the home page

Hayward, Tom

Yes, I’m interested in such a group.  I’ve been involved to a greater or lesser degree in Bates’ web development ever since the days of the first “Campus-Wide Information System” in the oh-so distant past.  Right now I’m kind of the de facto webmaster for the Library’s website, but we’re definitely looking to make some fairly major changes, so I would welcome the opportunity to find out what’s cooking in other areas of the campus.

  • Served on initial information system teams (pre-Web)
  • Unofficial Webmaster of library content
  • Lots of connections to outside vendors, catalog system
  • Audience: primarily internal, but external audiences can use catalog, other systems
  • Looking to other institutions for best practices for presenting library
  • Probably moving toward dynamic, database systems
  • Just want to keep up

The presentation where I heard about the “AEIOU” concept (Already Existing Information, Optimally Uploaded) was by David Silver, Asst. Prof. of Media Studies, University of San Francisco.

Hubley, Doug

I’m interested in participating in discussions about the future Bates Web. I’m more interested if the meetings are not held at lunchtime. I’d be happy to attend an informal planning session if we can keep it to an hour.

Jawor, Ed

Web Responsibilities: Going forward, I’m charged with the customer/client facing part of our Web site for Print, Copy and Mail Services, which should be a brochure / self-directed informational site.

Additionally, we will be adding job submission tools to our site, too, and hopefully in the near future.

Lambert, Alli

  • Communication with alumni, online community
  • Maintains BOLD (1996-present) and several business networks
  • Goals: get more time

Lovett, Becky

  • 13 years
  • Maintains most pages on Store Web site

Obptande, Debbie

I work with Leigh Weisenberger on content management for the Admissions website keeping information for prospective students and Admitted Students current.  I have been using ICMS since it was implemented updating and creating pages as needed for the Admissions office.

I would like better access to current photos for use on the website and more ways to interact and communicate with our audience.  I would also like an easier way to incorporate tables into the content.

  • Been working Web since before Xpower (B.X. ;)
  • Want more resources to see what other departments are doing

Peters, Ellen

Sure, count me in!  As I think you know, I am responsible for the woefully out of date OIPA pages…

Phelan, Renee

11/7/07 – having trouble finding info on the web roundtable meeting – time, place, etc. or even if there is one?? I tried a search of the wiki and did not find info. easily. RSP

[Comment (JC): Click on meetings at the right for information about the meetings; I'll put in more information. Also, I'll check to find out why it didn't turn up in the search.]

Please count me in! – for all things web, actually. I troubleshoot a variety of web questions for the Bates community. Dreamweaver 8 to straight on unix, to teaching/troubleshooting iCMS. Many of my working hours are spent on tasks related to the web at Bates. We have so many different aspects and participants that it is challenge, but I feel a necessity to see it as a whole. This is a source of debate in the web management group that I am part of, representing HDS, as well as being the trainer for iCMS.

The one item I would like to see as an outcome of these meetings would be a collective voice for all parts of webweaving, not just official (xml pages), ATPM (Academic technology project manager drupals and other one-off crafted sites like CTS students have done in the summer), and Dreamweaver sites that duplicate info already on “official” pages from the faculty, but also the student organization pages that are proliferic – but are also not maintained well.  We need to be collective about keeping the information current regardless of the tool used or whether or not you know it even goes with Bates College from look/feel/navigation link back to www!

  • Trainer for iCMS (used to be called x-power)
  • People don’t give themselves enough credit! Cheerleader as well as trainer.
  • Unresolved problems will be brought to attention of management team
  • Want to change theme “slow to get going”
  • Also support Dreamweaver, esp. students; however how many systems can we really sustain?

Potter, Sarah

This is such a great idea…  Becky Lovett, our assistant store manager, has responded and will try and attend next week’s lunch meeting but I would like to attend future meetings as well.

  • Maintains Bates Bookstore online ordering page (through Yahoo)
  • Working on contracting services site
  • Potential: Bates Advantage for employee discounts

Purrington, Lorelei

I update the web pages for the following departments/programs:

  • African American Studies
  • American Cultural Studies
  • Asian Studies
  • Classical and Medieval Studies
  • Economics
  • Sociology
  • Women and Gender Studies

I mostly update the faculty pages but sometimes update and make new “custom” pages.  I’ve also set up “slide shows.”

Richard, Alicia

I’m thrilled that you have invited me to join, and will be happy to participate.

As you know, my responsibilities include mostly general Advancement updates on the web.  Nothing has ever really been put in “writing” of the areas that I am supposed to be handling.

Richards, Regan

My responsibilities include:

  • Lead the 2002 ILS web project to combine Library and Information Services web sites when we were restructured into Information & Library Services.
  • Requested maintenance and periodic updates to bates.edu/ils
  • Redesign and improvements as requested by Library, Archives and Special Collections to their subsites.
  • Assistance for “below the fold” departmental websites, and faculty course and personal web sites.
  • Creation of various drupal sites for academic courses.
  • WebCT and LMS integration with Banner.
  • Creation of “header” images for Banner Web (Garnet Gateway) internal pages.
  • Participation on the Web Management Team.

Sengupta, Sagaree

I would love to learn to pull together and fine-tune the pre-existing Bates pages that have to do with Graduate Fellowships and Scholarships.  Many people never see certain existing resources.  I am still learning icms, but as the year-round Grad Fellowships information person, I am *extremely* interested in having helpful, easily updatable and _linked_ things for students out there. There’s a formality to a lot of the scholarship pages that needs to be balanced (in my opinion) with chatty advice that launches the student on self-assessment and drafting for scholarship applications–these would be the NEW pages I would compose.  I have looked at Wellesley’s and other fellowship office websites, and am jealous.

Alerting relevant faculty to the resources (especially after updating and additions) would also help them write their recommendations and make it easier for them to coordinate their efforts with the Graduate Fellowships Committee.

  • New graduate fellowships advisor
  • 20 years in teaching at college level; new to Web
  • Instructional medium
  • What’s on the Web is dignified, not up to date, accurate
  • Foundations are moving into electronic applications
  • We need much more accessible, casual information
  • Some is there; people often don’t know what is available

Shostak, Anthony

I do some of the museum’s web-page work, plus oversee the web pages devoted to our flagship outreach program, the Thousand Words Project.  We have plans to expand museum outreach to podcasts/vodcasts, and I will be the one in charge of those.

Stefko, Kat

Traister, Christina

  • Director for recent campaign
  • Created content, now for Supporting Bates
  • Web is becoming a primary way for constituents to get information
  • How to we make it exciting and interactive as a point of connection
  • Challenge: finding time to update content; often falls to bottom of priority list
  • It is important for the College to focus on the Web

Weisenburger, Leigh

I am an Assistant Dean in Admissions. I work with Debbie Obptande on content management for the Admissions website. We frequently update the Admisisons website with deadlines, events, and appication information for prospective students — our primary audience.

I constantly reference the web in conversation with prospective students, their families, and guidance counselors. I direct visitors to the web daily. I use it a resource to educate myself while traveling for Bates, so that I am sharing the most up-to-date stories and more.

I would love to see more communication between departments as changes are made to the website. Particularly with Admissions and Student Financial Services — we both need to share updates, as it benefits both parties. Beyond that, I would like to have more access to photographs and implementation of photos on the website.

And for the future… interaction is the key for Admissions! I envision an entirely interactive community at bates.admissions.edu.

  • Handle the management of admissions text
  • We feel we’re behind; interested in moving forward
  • Constant demands from 16-17 year olds for colorful, interactive experience
  • Students don’t want viewbooks, they want URLs

White, Andrew

My responsibilities re: the web on campus include:

  • supervision of staff who support faculty in creating and delivering web-based course materials (static and multimedia) via a variety of apps (php, flash) and containers (LMS, blogs)

  • supervision of staff who support ILS web site
  • oversight of projects with significant web component (R25; various institutional repositories)
  • interest in expanding use of web-based multimedia in support of the curriculum (streaming audio, video)
  • Charged with supporting supporting curriculum technologies
  • Updates several committee sites, but 4 of 10 on staff are dedicated with supporting faculty in classroom
