Jay Collier

Jay Collier is Web communications manager at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he develops strategies for online engagement and produces, edits, and manages Web initiatives including the recently-redeveloped Home and Views sites. He has worked in media production and management at Dartmouth, MIT, and WGBH and is interested in innovative learning communities that value integrative thinking and principled social action.

Previously, he was an associate director of communications at Dartmouth College and leader of the Web Publishing Services group. As a producer and project manager, Jay worked with campus departments and other Web professionals to analyze, architect, produce, and sustain Web communications. Before Dartmouth, he produced and edited videos and Web sites for schools and labs at MIT.

He is also the publisher and producer of Web sites for WGBH/Boston alumni and Nature Compass, which serves nature education, conservation, and recreation organizations in northern New England.

Responsibilities (FY10)

Strategy development

  • Develop strategies for online communications across the College and with external constituencies
  • Develop strategies to support Advancement and OCMR goals
  • Develop Bates.edu domain architecture vision and direction
  • Develop vision and direction for initiatives: content platform, online collaboration

Program administration

  • Recruit and supervise staff and students
  • Track milestones and define priorities
  • Develop and administer budget
  • Triage all inquiries and feedback submitted to www.bates.edu and home.bates.edu

Project management

  • Evaluate project requests, goals, and outcomes
  • Convene and lead cross-divisional project teams
  • Clarify and coordinate project scope, milestones, deliverables
  • Coordinate task progress and completion by internal and external resources
  • Communicate with clients, the production team, and staff in ILS (the College’s IT organization).

Collaboration & coaching

  • Consult with Advancement, OCMR, ILS, and other departments and offices
  • Advise alumni volunteers in online communications
  • Coordinate contributors and provide training and coaching
  • Direct student production work

Information architecture & content development

  • Develop information architecture strategies
  • Inventory existing content, and evaluate for relevance, currency, and accuracy
  • Integrate goals and content into site architectures
  • Commission, develop, edit, and manage content
  • Monitor, manage, and edit social media namespaces

Production & integration

  • Identify, evaluate, and test production software
  • Create prototypes to identify optimal production workflows
  • Integrate enterprise data into Web communications
