Position Description

  • POSITION TITLE: ONLINE MEDIA PRODUCER I
  • DEPARTMENT: Communications and Media Relations
  • DIVISION: Office of College Advancement
  • REPORTS TO: Web Communications Manager

Position purpose

The Online Media Producer is responsible for planning and executing original and repurposed online content — including text, imagery, audio, video, and interactive media — that accurately reflects the mission and programs of the College for both the general public and for target audiences.

Key accountabilities

Project management

Scopes and plans online media production projects. Communicates with clients, the production team, and staff in ILS (the College’s IT organization). Manages productions from inception through completion. Coordinates community contributors, and provides training and coaching. Supervises student workers.

Information architecture

Inventories existing content, and evaluates for relevance, currency, and accuracy. Develops and implements content structures, navigational models, and optimization for search engine findability. Develops content development and interface design within information architecture context.

Content production

Produces new content to fit information architecture, including writing, videography, photography, audio recording, editing, assembly, and compression. Writes, edits, and proofreads new content. Develops prototypes, conducts user testing, and launches content to meet defined goals.

Interface design

Develops, adapts, and implements interface patterns, usability guidelines, and interaction standards that can be applied to a spectrum of online experiences — including Web, e-mail, and messaging — across platforms and applications. Delivers coded prototypes and templates to colleagues and partners.

Technical coordination

Coordinates with staff in ILS to ensure that online media production and delivery systems provide a seamless online experience for visitors. Ensures that online media architecture, content, and interfaces meet established standards.

Qualifications

Skills and knowledge

  • Strong project management, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Advanced writing/editing, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to coordinate staff and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in journalism, marketing, publications, and/or public relations.
  • Familiarity with higher education and understanding of online positioning of an institution.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.

Professional experience

  • Five years in online communications and/or media production preferred, ideally in higher education.
  • Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures, including: usability, accessibility, W3C standards (XHTML), interface and interaction patterns, CSS layout presentation, multiple-bandwidth compression.
  • Mastery of multimedia production and post-production tool sets, including, but not limited to, Mac OS X, Adobe Creative Suite, FinalCutPro, GoogleEarth, PTGui, Audacity, CSSEdit, SnapzPro, Toast, Zoomifyer, and OmniOutliner.
  • Experience working with a wide range of constituents, including novices, IT and communications staff, and senior leadership.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in writing, editing, and managing content on a significant Web site.

Educational experience

Four year college degree, or equivalent, preferably in Communications, Journalism, Computer Science, or the equivalent experience.
