Moving into the Hub

After two years blogging at batesmedia.net, I have moved to a new host and domain name: batesweb.net.

This is not because I’ve been dissatisfied with WordPress.com. To the contrary; the service has proven capable of just about everything I’ve needed to do with this blog.

Rather, I’m now leading a new program to renovate official Web communications at Bates, and I need to pull together background content from a variety of projects I’ve managed over the past three years: posts at Wordpress.com, pages at PBwiki (now PBworks), and the IKE Project from Google Sites. Regardless of our final software selection, I wanted to bring it all together into one place.

Given WordPress’ robust import and export functions, it has been my blogging software of choice for some time. Getting content out of the Wordpress.com service was a snap: I downloaded an export file from the site and uploaded that export file into the new site. That’s it.

Migrating from PBWorks and GoogleSites was more complicated, partially because of the lack of differentiation between drill-down pages and chronological posts, and also because I had to rearchitect all of the content into a new organizing structure. However, other than adapting the top-left header shield designed by Ethan, I was able to develop this new site in WordPress without any assistance, which was one of my goals: simplicity at all levels of production.

I look forward to releasing the new site, along with the collections of our past work, in the next week.
